“Broadway isn’t producing new musicals these days; it’s downloading them. Perhaps some sort of sponsorship can be arranged: “Netflix presents the 66th Annual Tony Awards Celebrating the Best of Hollywood on Broadway.”

“Johanna (Quartet)” from the new cast recording of Sweeney Todd.
Correct me if I’m wrong… but isn’t Sweeney’s ‘Johanna….’ just as he sets in supposed to be an octave lower than that? It really threw me when I heard it live.
Actually, to my knowledge, Sweeney never sings an overlapping “Johanna” with Anthony in the beginning of the song. Don’t know why it was added for this production… I guess there’s a nice moment of harmonic dissonance there with the major second, idk.
Huh. I’m sure I’ve heard it before with all of Sweeney’s part an octave lower, which - I thought - sounded amazing. I can’t unhear it now… How strange.
I’ve heard it an octave lower too, in the NYPO recording with George Hearn as Sweeney and Patti as Mrs Lovett, I think.
It is an octave lower on both recordings. Sweeney Todd is a baritone role, and Michael Ball is a baritenor. Therefore, they raised his part up the octave. I’m pretty sure they did this with some other songs in the show too.
When I hear/think of Lida Rose from Music Man…this comes to mind
Wednesday: How all occasions do inform against me and spur my dull revenge… O, from this time forth, my thoughts be bloody or nothing worth… If I must strike you dead, I will.
Pugsley: [slashes Wednesday’s left wrist; blood sprays out] A hit! A very palpable hit!
[Wednesday cuts off Pugley’s left arm; blood pours heavily]
Pugsley: [Pugsley slashes Wednesday’s throat; a fountain of blood]
Wednesday: [turns to the audience and sprays the front rows with blood] O, Proud Death, what feast is toward in thine eternal cell?
Wednesday: [drops both swords and falls to her knees] Sweet Oblivion, open your arms!
[choking and gasping for breath, Wednesday collapses, dead]
Wednesday: [The audience sits in stunned silence, covered with blood]
#passion.

Can we just stop and appreciate Nicki Minaj’s face for a moment. She looks genuinely very concerned for Josh here, like she thinks he was actually in an arena full of kids trying to kill him, and is confused as to why no one else finds this as shocking as she does.
